Why Do Different Ethnic Groups Have Different Nose Types?

So, what is the reason behind this regional variation? The simple answer to this is genetic drift i.e., a random process that causes the frequency of gene variants in a population to change over time. But researches have shown that climate change also contributes to the variety of nose shapes among different races.

A research published by Journal of PLOS Genetics suggests that the width of the nose is directly related to temperature and humidity. Now you can relate why caucasians being the residents of cold areas usually have narrow nostrils while the Africans have wide bases and flared nostrils.

Common Asian Nose Types

Asia being the largest subcontinent is a home to a variety of ethnic groups and cultural backgrounds. The facial features including nose sizes and shapes also vary among these populations. But generally speaking, asian noses have characteristic low bridges, rounded tips and wide bases. This nose shape is also referred to as mesorrhine nose.

South Asian Nose Types

South Asia includes countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Maldives, Nepal, etc. People here greatly differ in nose shapes and other beauty standards. However, on a general note;

• People from South India have wider, broader noses with thick sebaceous skin and a droopy tip.
• Those from North India and Pakistan have slimmer noses, with thick nasal skin and weaker cartilage.

East Asian Nose Types

The countries of China, Japan, South and North Korea come under East Asia. These populations are known for;

• Flat nasal bridges
• Small size
• Wide bases
• Thick skin
• Wide space between the alae of the nose

They have the smallest noses with respect to surface area.

Southeast Asian Nose Types

This region includes countries like Vietnam, Philippine, Thailand, etc. These people usually have small noses with flat dorsums and narrow nostrils.

Uncommon Asian Nose Types

Besides the above mentioned nose shapes, some other nose types may also exist among the Asian population. They are not very common but are considered very unique.

• Snub Nose – Snub or upturned nose is a characteristic nose shape with a short nasal bridge and upward tip of the nose.
• Bumpy Nose – It is also called a hump nose. It is characterised by a hump on the upper part of the nasal septum and gives a unique side profile.
• Bulbous Nose – Bulbous or round nose has a highly pointed and prominent tip.
• Hawk Nose – As the name suggests, this nose shape has a highly raised nasal bridge which is curved downward just like a hawk.
